BAL to Open Six New Basketball Courts Across West Africa

Posted : 01 October 2026

The Basketball Africa League is set to unveil six new or refurbished basketball courts across West Africa over the next three weeks. The projects are part of the league’s ongoing community development initiatives aimed at expanding access to basketball facilities.

The six projects will provide communities with new or upgraded courts designed to offer safe and accessible spaces for basketball and other community activities. The BAL said each project has its own story, but they share the goal of connecting communities and creating opportunities through the sport.

The initiative forms part of NBA Africa’s wider commitment to build or renovate 1,000 basketball courts across the continent over the next decade. The programme is designed to improve access to basketball infrastructure while supporting youth development in communities where the courts are located.

Recent projects show the wider scope of the programme. In May 2025, the BAL and the City of Dakar unveiled a renovated court in Yoff, Senegal, while another court opened in Abidjan later that year through the BAL’s partnership with Wave Côte d’Ivoire.

The Dakar project included a basketball clinic for boys and girls aged 16 and under. The Abidjan project also featured a youth basketball clinic and a U-23 3-on-3 tournament for male and female players, linking court development with grassroots activities.

The BAL said the latest six courts will help young people develop their basketball skills while providing spaces for stronger community interaction. The projects are also intended to support wider social development beyond competitive basketball.

The court programme is part of the BAL’s broader community work across Africa. NBA Africa has described the infrastructure plan as a way to create more opportunities for boys and girls to access the sport, with equal participation also forming part of its youth development approach.

The initiative has continued to expand through partnerships with governments, businesses and community organisations. In 2026, the BAL also entered a multiyear partnership with Qatar Foundation that includes support for community initiatives and court renovations under the 1,000-court commitment.

The six new West African projects will therefore add to an expanding network of basketball facilities across the continent. Their unveiling over the next three weeks will give more communities access to courts for training, competitions and youth programmes.

The BAL said the projects reflect its wider effort to use basketball as a platform for social impact. The league’s community infrastructure programme continues to develop alongside its professional competition and grassroots basketball activities across Africa.
