Austin Reaves Ready for Bigger Lakers Role After LeBron James' Departure

Posted : 14 July 2026

Austin Reaves says the Los Angeles Lakers are entering unfamiliar territory following LeBron James' departure, but the newly extended guard is eager to help lead the franchise into its next chapter. Speaking publicly for the first time since signing a lucrative new contract, Reaves admitted that adjusting to life without James will take time after spending his entire NBA career alongside the four-time champion.

Reaves recently agreed to a new four-year, $180 million contract that secures his future with the Lakers while also giving the organization greater financial flexibility for future roster moves. The deal reinforces the team's confidence in the 27-year-old, who is expected to take on significantly more responsibility alongside fellow star Luka Doncic.

The guard revealed that he remains close friends with Doncic, saying they speak almost every day and often chat about basketball and even golf. Reaves believes their strong relationship off the court will help them build chemistry as they become the focal point of the Lakers' offense.

Los Angeles has undergone major changes during the offseason, adding Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili while saying goodbye to several key contributors, including James, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton and Luke Kennard. Reaves expressed enthusiasm about the team's new additions, describing the incoming players as exciting pieces capable of helping the Lakers compete.

Among the newcomers, Reaves highlighted his familiarity with Kessler after the pair represented Team USA together at the FIBA World Cup. He praised the towering center's defensive impact, basketball intelligence and positive personality, saying he is looking forward to sharing the court with him again.

With head coach JJ Redick overseeing a reshaped roster, Reaves acknowledged that every player will have new responsibilities this season. He said he is prepared to embrace whatever role the coaching staff assigns him as the Lakers look to remain competitive in the post-LeBron era.

Despite opportunities elsewhere, Reaves reiterated that staying in Los Angeles was always his priority. Having previously expressed his desire to spend his entire career with the Lakers, he said his commitment to the franchise never changed, making the long-term extension the ideal outcome for both sides.
