Ausar Thompson Agrees to $155 Million Extension With Pistons

Posted : 19 September 2026

Detroit Pistons forward Ausar Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale contract extension with the franchise, according to ESPN sources.

The 23-year-old secured a fully guaranteed deal after a standout defensive campaign in 2025-26. Thompson earned First Team All-Defensive honors and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting while averaging 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 0.9 blocks per game.

Thompson also led the NBA with 2.0 steals per game and recorded 215 combined steals and blocks during the regular season. Since entering the league as the fifth overall pick in the 2023 draft, he has become one of only three players to register at least 300 steals and 150 blocks.

His defensive impact continued in the playoffs as Detroit reached the Eastern Conference semifinals. Across 14 postseason games, Thompson averaged 8.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.8 blocks per game, becoming the first player since Anthony Davis in 2020 to record at least 25 steals and 25 blocks in a single postseason.

The contract also gives Thompson a place in NBA history alongside his twin brother Amen Thompson of the Houston Rockets. The brothers are the first pair of siblings to each secure NBA contracts worth more than $100 million, with Amen recently agreeing to a five-year, $208 million extension. Their combined new deals are worth $363 million.

Detroit has also been negotiating with center Jalen Duren, another key young player entering restricted free agency. The Pistons have reportedly offered Duren a contract worth more than $190 million, although negotiations between the two sides remain unresolved.

Thompson's NBA journey has also included a significant health setback. His sophomore season was interrupted in March 2024 after he was diagnosed with a blood clot, but he was cleared to return by the NBA's fitness-to-play panel eight months later and successfully resumed his career.
