The Atlanta Dream has officially strengthened its roster by signing Nigerian international forward Amy Okonkwo to a developmental contract. The announcement came on Wednesday following Okonkwo's departure from the Dallas Wings training camp. This move marks a significant step for the D’Tigress captain as she continues to establish her presence in the WNBA.
Okonkwo made a notable impact during the 2025 WNBA season while playing for the Dallas Wings. She appeared in eight games and averaged 11.0 points along with 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per match. Her efficiency was particularly impressive; she shot over 60 percent from the field during her tenure.
One of her most remarkable performances occurred on September 11, 2025, against the Phoenix Mercury. Coming off the bench, she scored a career-high 20 points to lead her team to victory. She also made history as the first undrafted player since 2000 to average at least 10 points while shooting 60 percent or better in her first two league appearances.
Beyond her club career, Okonkwo has been the driving force behind the recent success of the Nigerian national team. She led D’Tigress to consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles in 2023 and 2025. In both tournaments, her dominant displays earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Her leadership has solidified Nigeria's status as a powerhouse in African basketball.
The 6-foot-2 forward also recently completed a productive winter season in Turkey with Besiktas. She averaged nearly 15 points per game in the Turkish league, showcasing her scoring versatility before returning to the United States. Her signing provides the Atlanta Dream with additional depth and international experience in the frontcourt.
Atlanta currently looks to improve its standing in the early stages of the 2026 season. The team is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Aces this Sunday at the State Farm Arena. Fans are eager to see if Okonkwo will make her debut for the Dream in that high-profile matchup.
