Anthony Edwards Set for Knee Procedure as Timberwolves Face Major Injury Blow

Posted : 28 October 2026

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is expected to miss up to two months after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The operation, scheduled for Thursday, comes just four games into the 2026-27 NBA season and represents a significant setback for Minnesota.

The 25-year-old guard had been experiencing discomfort in his right knee, which became noticeable during Minnesota's home victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. He was subsequently listed as questionable ahead of Monday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was cleared to play after completing his pregame warm-up.

Despite the issue, Edwards delivered an outstanding performance in Cleveland, scoring 47 points in 41 minutes as the Timberwolves suffered a narrow 127-125 overtime defeat. His latest scoring display marked his second game with at least 45 points in the opening four contests of the season.

Edwards had made an exceptional start to the campaign, averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting approximately 48% from the field. His scoring average ranked among the highest in the league before the injury setback.

The knee problem also raises concerns because Edwards dealt with recurring soreness in the same leg last season. He missed nine of Minnesota's final 22 regular-season games while managing the issue and later suffered a hyperextended left knee during the playoffs.

Before the current season began, Edwards revealed that he had taken time off during the summer to allow his knees to recover. He had not reported significant problems during training camp, making the latest development particularly disappointing for the player and the franchise.

His absence could also affect his eligibility for major individual honours. NBA players generally need to appear in at least 65 regular-season games to qualify for awards such as Most Valuable Player and All-NBA selection. Missing approximately two months would make reaching that threshold difficult for Edwards this season.

However, Edwards' management has emphasised that winning a championship remains the priority rather than individual recognition. His representative, Justin Holland, told ESPN that the team's focus was on competing for a title and that the Timberwolves had demonstrated their potential early in the campaign.

Minnesota will now need other players to shoulder a greater offensive responsibility while its leading scorer recovers. The team had won three of its first four games before the reported procedure, and maintaining that momentum without Edwards will be a major challenge.

The Timberwolves have not yet announced an exact return date, meaning his recovery timeline will depend on the outcome of the procedure and his progress during rehabilitation. If the expected absence reaches two months, Minnesota could be without its star guard until around late December.
