Anthony Edwards became the third-youngest player in NBA history to score 10,000 career points when he sank a 13-foot fadeaway jumper from the baseline during the fourth quarter of Minnesota Timberwolves’ 131-122 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night.
At 24 years and 156 days old, Edwards reached the milestone behind only LeBron James (23 years, 59 days) and Kevin Durant (24 years, 33 days). He is among seven players in league history to reach 10,000 points before turning 25, joining the likes of Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Tracy McGrady, and Carmelo Anthony.
After the game, Edwards downplayed the achievement, saying, “To be honest, it’s cool, but I know I’ve got a lot more to go, so it’s really nothing. I’m kind of sick that I got in front of Kobe. I wish I’d waited like 100 days or something, but yeah, it’s all good.”
Edwards contributed 25 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds in the win, helping the Timberwolves reach season highs in both field goal (51-for-89, 57%) and three-point (20-for-38, 53%) percentages. He shot 10-for-20 from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch praised Edwards’ scoring ability, recalling the young star’s first 40-point game against Phoenix during his rookie season. “The scoring comes naturally to him in a lot of ways,” Finch said. “Even back then, you knew there was something inside him where he could get to that level.”
Edwards, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, debuted at age 19 and reached 10,000 points in just 412 games, the 28th-fastest in league history and seventh-fastest among active players behind Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, Trae Young, and Donovan Mitchell. In Timberwolves history, only Kevin Garnett and Karl-Anthony Towns have previously reached the 10,000-point mark.
