Al Ahly are set to become the Egyptian club with the highest number of appearances in the Basketball Africa League when the 2026 Sahara Conference tips off in Rabat. This milestone moves them past local rivals Zamalek and Al Ittihad Alexandria in total tournament participation. The Cairo-based team remains one of only two clubs to have ever won the BAL trophy during a debut season.
The Red Devils first tasted continental glory in 2023 when they secured the title in their maiden campaign. That victory added to their storied history, which includes a FIBA Africa Champions Cup win in 2016. However, the club faced a difficult period in 2024 after failing to reach the semi-finals and finishing the season in eighth position.
Domestic dominance paved the way for their return to the international stage this year. Al Ahly clinched their spot in the 2026 BAL season by winning the 2025 Egypt Super League. They defeated Al Ittihad Alexandria in a grueling five-game series to secure their third league championship in four years. This win reinforced their status as the premier force in Egyptian basketball.
The current squad features a core of experienced Egyptian internationals who were vital to their previous BAL success. Playmaker Ehab Amin and center Omar Oraby continue to lead the team alongside veteran shooter Amr Gendy. Management has also strengthened the roster with new signings, including former FUS Rabat guard John Jordan and former G League player Osay Osifo.
Head coach Linos Gavriel will lead the tactical charge from the sidelines. The Greek-Cypriot coach has a long history of success in Africa, having led Tunisian teams to major finals in previous decades. Gavriel recently boosted his reputation by winning the 2023 FIBA West Asia Super League with Manama Club. His expertise will be vital as Al Ahly seeks to reclaim the throne in Morocco.
