AJ Dybantsa Outshines Darryn Peterson in Electric Summer League Debut

The highly anticipated first meeting between the top two picks in the 2026 NBA Draft lived up to expectations as AJ Dybantsa led the Washington Wizards to a 92-88 victory over the Utah Jazz in their NBA Summer League opener. A star-studded crowd that included Anthony Davis, Trae Young, Cooper Flagg and Jalen Williams packed the Thomas & Mack Center to watch the much-hyped showdown between Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson.

Dybantsa delivered an impressive all-around display, finishing with a game-high 27 points and seven rebounds in just 26 minutes. Although he struggled from beyond the arc, missing all five of his three-point attempts, the Wizards forward repeatedly attacked the basket and showcased the athleticism that made him the first overall selection. He left the game late with leg soreness but later confirmed he expects to be available for Washington's next Summer League contest.

Peterson, selected second overall by Utah, responded with 24 points despite enduring an inconsistent shooting night. The talented guard flashed his shot-making ability and creativity but also battled turnovers as Washington's defence applied constant pressure throughout the game. Despite the defeat, Peterson once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the league's brightest young prospects.

The rivalry between the two rising stars stretches back to their high school and college careers, adding extra intrigue to their first professional meeting. Dybantsa admitted he was motivated to finally get the better of Peterson after previous defeats, while Peterson insisted being drafted behind his rival will continue to fuel his competitive drive throughout his NBA career.

One of the game's defining moments came late in the opening quarter when Dybantsa powered through multiple defenders for an emphatic two-handed dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. The performance offered Wizards fans an exciting glimpse of the franchise's future, while Peterson's resilience suggested the budding rivalry between the top two picks is only just beginning.
