ABU Appoints Scott Nnaji as Head Coach, Basketball Academy General Manager

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has appointed renowned basketball coach and Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Technical Committee member Scott Nnaji as the Head Coach of its basketball team and General Manager of its proposed Basketball Academy.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the university's Public Affairs Directorate on Sunday. In his new role, Nnaji will also oversee the establishment of the university's Basketball Academy, which aims to nurture young talent and expand opportunities for aspiring basketball players.

The statement said the contract appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, who signed Nnaji's appointment letter.

According to the university, Nnaji is expected to strengthen ABU's rich basketball tradition by introducing innovative coaching methods that will improve the team's performance, discipline, and competitiveness.

He will also lead the development of the Basketball Academy into a sustainable talent pipeline capable of producing elite players while creating educational and career opportunities for young Nigerians.

The Vice-Chancellor described Nnaji, an alumnus of the university, as a worthy ambassador whose achievements in basketball have brought honour to ABU.

Prof. Ahmed noted that Nnaji's extensive experience, including serving as head coach of Nigeria's junior national teams and the senior women's national team, makes him well suited to lead the university's basketball programme.

He expressed confidence that Nnaji's leadership, expertise, and vision would inspire student-athletes and contribute significantly to the growth of basketball both within the university and across Nigeria.

Nnaji, who currently serves as President of the Basketball Coaches Association of Nigeria (BCAN) and as a technical member of the NBBF Board, began his coaching career with the Nigeria Customs basketball team in 2000.

He later coached Nigeria's Under-18 men's national team, the Junior Tigers, where he guided preparations for international competitions, including the FIBA youth qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

Throughout his coaching career, Nnaji has earned recognition for his emphasis on discipline, tactical awareness, and player development, with many athletes under his guidance progressing to represent Nigeria at the international level.

Beyond the national teams, he has worked with several domestic clubs, including Plateau United and Wikki Tourists, contributing to player development and the continued growth of Nigeria's domestic basketball league.

He has also championed structural reforms in Nigerian basketball by advocating greater corporate investment, stronger grassroots development programmes, and enhanced mentorship opportunities for young coaches and players through BCAN.

The university expressed optimism that Nnaji's appointment would usher in a new era for ABU basketball and further strengthen the institution's reputation as one of Nigeria's leading centres for sports development.
