Abdullahi Takes NBBF Presidency After Election Contest

Posted : 16 October 2026

Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), defeating former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji and ex-international Ejike Ugboaja in an election disrupted by procedural hiccups in Abuja.

Abdullahi polled 48 votes to secure the presidency, while Oyedeji garnered eight votes. Ugboaja failed to register a vote in the contest.

His emergence signals a leadership transition at the federation, with the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria set to succeed outgoing president Musa Kida.

Ugo Udezue also secured the position of NBBF Vice President unopposed, having emerged as the sole candidate for the office.

The election ushers in a new chapter for Nigerian basketball, with the incoming leadership expected to tackle persistent challenges affecting the domestic game.

Key areas requiring attention include strengthening local competitions, expanding grassroots participation, improving players’ welfare, securing sustainable funding, and enhancing the administration of basketball nationwide.

Abdullahi assumes office at a significant period for the sport, following the impressive international performances of Nigeria’s women’s national team, D’Tigress.

The new administration will face expectations to translate such international achievements into stronger domestic structures capable of developing emerging talents, improving competitive opportunities, and sustaining Nigeria’s basketball growth.

The election hiccups also place a spotlight on the need for effective governance and transparent electoral processes as the federation begins its next phase of leadership.
