2026 Nigeria Premier Basketball League: Coal City Blazers fired up for debut season

Coal City Blazers head coach, Chiedozi Nwoye, says the team is determined to make an immediate impact as they prepare for their opening game of the 2026 Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) season.

The Enugu-based club will begin life in Nigeria’s top-flight basketball league against Edo Beads in Group B of the Atlantic Conference, with all fixtures scheduled to take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The 2026 NPBL season officially tipped off on May 16 after an earlier proposed commencement date of May 9, with twenty teams battling for honours across the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences.

This season’s format will see teams compete in four stages: the Group Stage played on a home-and-away basis, the Inter-Group Round Robin phase, the Playoffs involving the top eight teams, and the Finals featuring the last four sides.

Coal City Blazers have been drawn alongside Athletes For Peace, Maktown Flyers, Edo Beads, and Kwara Falcons in a competitive Group B campaign.

Speaking ahead of the club’s first-ever NPBL match, Coach Nwoye expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness and mentality going into the encounter.

"Our preparation for the opening game has been very encouraging. Everyone understands the importance of starting strongly, and the players are fully ready for the challenge ahead," Nwoye stated.

Assistant coach, Kingsley Achu, also praised the intensity and commitment shown by the players during preparations, insisting the team is eager to compete at the highest level.

"The preparation has been intense, and the players are excited and ready for the season," Achu said.

Team co-owner, Ugo Udezue, who also serves as the South East representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, reaffirmed the club’s ambition to establish itself among the country’s leading basketball teams.

"The team is fully prepared and motivated to make a strong statement in the league this season," Udezue noted.

Coal City Blazers will now aim to announce their arrival in the NPBL with an impressive performance as they continue their quest for success in their maiden campaign.

The management and technical crew have put everything in place to ensure the players focus entirely on executing their game plan on the court. With high expectations from their growing fanbase in Enugu and across the South East, the Blazers are primed to showcase their talent and tactical discipline in this highly anticipated fixture.
