The 2025 Zenith Bank/NBBF Women’s Basketball League Final 8 Play-Off is set to commence on September 14 at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. This championship event represents the pinnacle of Nigeria’s women’s basketball season, with eight top teams vying for the national title and a spot in continental competitions.
The finalists—MFM Basketball Club, First Bank, Dolphins, Bayelsa Whales, Nigeria Customs, Titans Basket, Air Warriors, and Royal Aces—emerged from both the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences after a rigorous season. The journey began with the initial phase in Benin and Abuja, followed by zonal playoffs in Ilorin and Jos, highlighting the growing competitiveness of women’s basketball under the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
Defending champions MFM enter the Final 8 as favorites, showcasing a talented roster and cohesive team dynamics that make them a formidable contender. Five-time winners First Bank are expected to challenge strongly, leveraging their wealth of experience and seasoned players accustomed to high-pressure playoff situations.
Dolphins and Bayelsa Whales are considered dark horses, eager to upset the established order, while Savannah Conference teams—Titans Basket, Air Warriors, and Royal Aces—aim to demonstrate their strength and narrow the gap with the Atlantic Conference sides.
Beyond the competition, the championship serves as a key platform for promoting female athletes and inspiring young talents to pursue basketball at professional and international levels. Former tennis star Rolake Olagbegi and sports administrator Godwin Enakhena have voiced their support for MFM, encouraging the team to defend their title. Olagbegi presented training balls to the squad and urged players to stay disciplined, focused, and mentally strong throughout the eight-day event. Enakhena emphasized the value of motivation and teamwork, noting that defending a championship often demands more effort than winning it for the first time.
Basketball fans across Lagos are expected to flock to the National Stadium to witness thrilling matches and celebrate the increasing popularity of women’s basketball in Nigeria. The Final 8 Play-Off will run from September 14 to 22, featuring group stage games, semi-finals, and culminating in the highly anticipated grand finale.
