Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, has been chosen as the host city for the next expanded edition of the North Central Basketball Championship, which will include the female category.
This development was announced shortly after the curtain fell on the maiden edition in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, over the weekend.
Adamu Deshi Janlong, the initiator of the championship, explained that the North Central Basketball Forum (NCBF) has given its blessing to the move to stage the next edition in Ilorin and to include the female category in the competition.
“I want to thank the Almighty God for the successful staging of a championship of this magnitude. I also want to appreciate all the teams that were able to honor our invitation and give their very best both on and off the court,” said Adamu Deshi Janlong.
He expressed great joy over the quality and standard of play during the three-day competition, which was won by Plateau Peaks at the expense of N Youth Sport, 99-80.
On their way to the final, Peaks defeated Nasarawa Solid Heats 89-70, while N Youth Sport shortened Saint Olivers' journey, winning 73-60 in the semifinals.
“My high point for this championship is that I have seen young talents that need to be groomed and trained for this 'Great Country Nigeria.' It’s the love the children have for basketball and sports in general,” he said.
Adamu Deshi Janlong, who is the North Central representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), explained that the group of young talented and determined players he saw at the championship indicates that the future of basketball and sports in the most populous Black nation on Earth is truly bright.
“I saw in their eyes, words, and actions that they want to succeed as professional basketball players, and I also saw the energy in these kids to change the narrative of Nigerian sports positively,” he added.
