2025 Men's Afrobasket Championship: Nigeria to battle Libya, two others, in qualifiers

Posted : 02 January 2025

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) says it has begun preparations and buildup for the final and crucial qualifying window for the 2025 Men's AfroBasket Championship.

FIBA Men's AfroBasket 2025 will be the 31st edition of Africa's most prestigious continental men's basketball championship.

The tournament will take place in Luanda, the Angolan capital, from August 12 to 24, 2025, marking the fourth time Angola has hosted the event, following previous editions in 1989, 1999, and 2007.

Former AfroBasket champions and four-time continental silver medalists, Nigeria, will travel to Libya to compete in the final window of the 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket Qualifiers.

The NBBF has started reaching out to players they hope to invite, with some already formally invited to join D'Tigers, who are expected to roar and secure one of the two remaining tickets from Group B.

The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engineer Musa Kida, stated that the team traveling to Libya will be a mix of home-based players and those playing professionally outside Nigeria.

Similarly, the NBBF Vice President, who also serves as Technical Director, Babatunde Ogunade, explained that the Federation will do its very best to ensure the country presents a strong team capable of securing the ticket to Angola.

“We can only work with the players available during this window, but more importantly, the National Sports Commission (NSC) should provide the much-needed funds on time,” Ogunade stated.

If given the nod to guide the team, Ogoh Odaudu and Abdul Rahman Mohammed are expected to assemble a completely different squad from the one that participated in the first window of the Qualifiers in Tunisia.

Nigeria needs to win at least two of the three games they are scheduled to play and hope that Uganda falters in its chances. Cape Verde, currently with six points, is almost certain to reach the finals next year, even with three defeats in this window.

Host Libya, with five points, will secure a spot in Angola with two more wins, while Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying will end if Uganda. secures two victories in this qualifying window.
