South African sprinter Zakithi Nene delivered an impressive performance on Sunday, dominating a strong field to win the men’s 400m at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.
Nene, a finalist at last year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, crossed the line in 44.48 seconds to secure his second career Diamond League victory. American runner Jacory Patterson finished second in 44.69 seconds after a closely contested race.
Speaking after the win, Nene described the victory as a special achievement against a high-quality field, praising the atmosphere in Stockholm and the fast track conditions despite challenging wind. He also revealed that his early-season form has been encouraging, although he has been managing an Achilles injury.
South Africa enjoyed a strong presence at the meeting, with multiple athletes competing across sprint events. In the men’s 200m, Sinesipho Dambile produced a solid run to finish second in 20.10 seconds, while Mthi Mthimkhulu placed fifth in 20.78 seconds. The race was won by American sprinter Kenny Bednarek in 19.87 seconds.
In the women’s 800m, Prudence Sekgodiso continued her consistent international form by finishing fifth in 1:57.70. The event produced a standout performance from Switzerland’s Audrey Werro, who set a Diamond League record with a winning time of 1:53.98.
Athletics South Africa officials praised the early-season performances, highlighting Nene’s victory as a major confidence boost and encouraging athletes to maintain focus as the season progresses.
The Diamond League circuit continues with its sixth stop in Oslo, Norway, later this week.
