World U20 Championships: Oyibu Books 200m Final as Ezechukwu Sets New PB

Nigeria’s emerging sprint stars continued to make their mark at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with Success Oyibu securing a place in the women’s 200m final and Miracle Ezechukwu producing a stunning personal best.

Oyibu delivered a confident performance in her semifinal, winning the race in 23.13 seconds to automatically book her place in the medal showdown.

She held off South Africa’s Rume Burger, who finished second in 23.18 seconds, as the Nigerian sprinter maintained her composure to secure one of the coveted final spots.

Oyibu, whose season’s best stands at 22.90 seconds, will now turn her attention to the final with a medal firmly within her sights.

Ezechukwu, meanwhile, underlined her growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young sprint talents by smashing her personal best with a superb 22.61 seconds.

The performance saw Ezechukwu finish second in her semifinal and initially appeared to have secured her passage into the final, although her qualification remained subject to a technical decision by officials.

The teenager has enjoyed an impressive championship in Eugene, having already helped Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team establish a new national U20 record of 41.91 seconds on its way to the final.

Her latest 200m performance further demonstrated her rapid development and added to the growing optimism surrounding Nigeria’s next generation of female sprinters.

Oyibu and Ezechukwu’s performances have also added to a memorable championship for Team Nigeria, following Jessica Oji’s historic triumph in the women’s shot put.

Oji became the first Nigerian athlete to win a global field-event title at any level after claiming gold in the shot put, providing another significant milestone for the country’s athletics programme.

With Oyibu now preparing for the 200m final and Ezechukwu awaiting the final outcome of the technical review, Nigeria’s young athletes continue to provide plenty of reasons for optimism as the championships enter their decisive stages.

The performances of both sprinters further highlight the depth of Nigeria’s emerging athletics talent, with Oyibu now carrying the country’s hopes into the 200m medal race in Eugene.
