World U-20 Championships: Nwankwo Keeps Nigeria's Hopes Alive with 100m Semifinal Qualification

Nigeria's medal aspirations at the 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships received an early boost after Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo secured a place in the women's 100 metres semifinals with a composed performance in Eugene, Oregon.

Nwankwo emerged as Team Nigeria's standout performer on the opening day, finishing third in Heat Three in a time of 11.57 seconds to progress to the next round. Mia Maxwell won the heat in 11.33 seconds.

Her qualification provided a bright moment for the Nigerian contingent after the country's mixed 4x400 metres relay team narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

The quartet of Dominion Udoh, Jecinta Lawrence, Perfect Faye, and Faith Ezechukwu clocked 3:26.35 to finish sixth in their qualifying heat. With only the top three teams advancing, Nigeria's campaign in the event came to an early end.

There was further disappointment in the women's 100 metres as Lucy Nwankwo failed to advance after placing fifth in Heat Five with a time of 11.77 seconds.

Switzerland's Xenia Buri won the heat in 11.38 seconds, while Poland's Maja Gondek finished second in 11.59 seconds to claim the other automatic qualifying spot.

Attention now turns to the men's 100 metres, where Nigerian sprinters Gift Bright and Tejiri Godwin will be looking to book places in the next round and build on Rosemary Nwankwo's encouraging performance as the championships gather pace.

With several events still to come, Team Nigeria will be hoping to build on Nwankwo's qualification and improve its overall performance in Eugene. The championships continue to offer the country's young athletes an opportunity to compete against the world's best and challenge for honours.
