World Record Earns Nwachukwu Nigeria's Seventh Commonwealth Games Gold

Team Nigeria enjoyed another outstanding day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Goodness Nwachukwu produced a world record performance to win the country's seventh gold medal. Jessica Oji added a silver medal in the women's shot put, while Ezekiel Nathaniel qualified fastest for the men's 400m hurdles final.

Nwachukwu delivered the performance of the day in the women's F42-44/F61-64 discus throw. The Nigerian saved her best effort for the final round, launching the discus to 39.66m to break her own F42 world record by more than three metres and secure the Commonwealth Games title.

Her record-breaking throw proved decisive in a closely contested final. Wales' Funmi Oduwaiye finished with a best mark of 38.52m to claim the silver medal, while fellow Welsh athlete Bree Cronin completed the podium with a throw of 36.00m to take bronze.

Nigeria's medal haul continued to grow in the women's shot put. Nineteen-year-old Jessica Oji enjoyed a memorable senior championship debut by winning the silver medal with a personal best throw of 17.87m, underlining her potential as one of the country's rising stars in field events.

On the track, Commonwealth champion Ezekiel Nathaniel strengthened his medal credentials with an impressive performance in the men's 400m hurdles heats. He controlled Heat Two from start to finish, crossing the line in 48.69 seconds to qualify for the final as the fastest athlete across all qualifying races.

Nathaniel finished ahead of England's Jake Minshull, who clocked 48.88 seconds, while India's Santhosh Tamilarasan placed third in the heat with a time of 49.51 seconds. His commanding display makes him one of the favourites to challenge for another Commonwealth title in the final.

Nigeria's boxing team, however, experienced disappointment after Blessing Orakwe narrowly missed out on a medal in the women's 70kg division. She was eliminated in the quarterfinals following a closely contested bout against Australia's Lekeisha Pergoliti.

Orakwe lost by a 3-2 split decision after convincing two of the five judges with her performance. Despite the defeat, the Nigerian boxer produced a determined display against a strong opponent.

With several medal events still to come, Team Nigeria remains on course for a successful campaign in Glasgow. The latest achievements have strengthened the country's medal tally, while Nwachukwu's world record has become one of the standout moments of the Games so far.
