World Athletics Ultimate Championship Makes High-Profile Debut

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship has begun in Budapest, introducing a new season-ending athletics event featuring elite competitors and a record $10 million prize fund. The three-day competition is being held from September 11–13 at the National Athletics Centre.

The event is designed to bring together many of the world's leading athletes in a shorter, high-intensity format. Unlike traditional championships, the competition features limited fields, no medal ceremony and significantly increased prize money, with individual winners earning $150,000.

The opening night immediately delivered major performances. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men's 5,000 metres in 12:59.24, marking an impressive return after Achilles surgery. Cole Hocker finished second in 13:00.05, while American Parker Wolfe took third.

Sweden's Armand “Mondo” Duplantis also claimed victory in the pole vault after clearing 6.20 metres. He then attempted 6.32m in an effort to improve his world record but was unsuccessful on all three attempts in difficult windy conditions. Greece's Emmanouil Karalis finished second with 6.15m.

Other opening-night winners included Germany's Merlin Hummel, who won the men's hammer throw with 81.46m, while Masai Russell took the women's 100m hurdles in 12.22 seconds. Ja'Kobe Tharp narrowly won the men's 110m hurdles in 12.94 seconds.

World Athletics has positioned the Ultimate Championship as a fresh way to present athletics, combining elite competition with a more theatrical atmosphere. The opening session attracted a sold-out crowd of 20,557 spectators, according to World Athletics.

The championship continues through Sunday, with further finals featuring some of the biggest names in global athletics. The new event is scheduled to become a biennial fixture on the international calendar.
