Nigeria Gains Another Potential Athlete from U.S.

Posted : 15 February 2026

Nigeria has received a major boost in athletics following the official confirmation by World Athletics that U.S.-based shot putter Jessica Orji has switched her allegiance from the United States to Nigeria, effective February 3, 2026.

The approval makes Orji eligible to represent Nigeria in international competitions, strengthening the country’s field event prospects ahead of major global championships.

Orji boasts a personal and season’s best throw of 18.45m — a mark that exceeds the Nigerian national record of 18.43m set by Vivian Chukwuemeka in April 2003. However, her 18.45m throw will not count as a Nigerian record because it was achieved while she was still representing the United States.

Her decision to don Nigeria’s colours comes at a crucial time for the nation’s athletics, which has witnessed a steady influx of diaspora talent willing to represent their heritage.

At the same time, Nigerian athletics continues to battle a worrying talent drain, with several homegrown stars expressing frustration over administrative shortcomings.

Sprint sensation Favour Ofili had earlier signalled her intention to switch allegiance to Turkey after she was denied the opportunity to compete in the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics due to administrative lapses. The incident sparked outrage within the athletics community, especially as no sanctions were reportedly imposed on officials involved.

Similarly, Favour Ashe, the 2022 Nigerian champion and one of the country’s brightest sprint prospects, is also believed to be considering opportunities abroad.

In previous years, hammer thrower Annette Echikunwoke had switched allegiance to Nigeria but later returned to represent the United States following reported challenges linked to administrative management.

Orji’s switch therefore reflects both promise and concern within Nigerian athletics. While the country continues to attract diaspora athletes eager to contribute to national glory, issues of governance and athlete welfare remain critical areas requiring urgent attention.

With Orji now cleared to compete for Nigeria, expectations will be high — not only for podium finishes but also for improved structures that can sustain and retain both foreign-based and homegrown talent in the years ahead.
