World Athletics (WA) controversially rescinded Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel’s bronze medal in the men’s 400m hurdles at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, overturning an earlier decision that would have awarded him the podium finish.
Nathaniel had initially finished fourth with a Nigerian record of 47.11 seconds, just 0.05 seconds behind Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba, who had been awarded third place.
The initial medal reshuffle followed the disqualification of American Rai Benjamin, who originally won in 46.54 seconds, for displacing a hurdle and impeding Brazil’s Alison dos Santos.
This decision temporarily promoted dos Santos to gold, Samba to silver, and Nathaniel to bronze, which would have given Nigeria its first men’s World Championship medal since Francis Obikwelu’s silver in 1999.
However, WA reversed its decision without explanation, reinstating Benjamin as the winner and ultimately denying Nathaniel the historic medal.
Despite the disappointment, Nathaniel became the third Nigerian to reach a final at the Tokyo World Championships and the first to do so in the 400m hurdles since Henry Amike in 1987.
Earlier in the championships, Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan had secured silver in the women’s 100m hurdles on 15 September, clocking 12.29 seconds, narrowly behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who set a national record of 12.24 seconds, while America’s Grace Stark claimed bronze in 12.34 seconds.
