WA Ranking: Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan Returns as World No. 88

Posted : 28 June 2025

Following a powerful start to the 2025 athletics season, Nigeria’s sprint hurdler and world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Oluwatobiloba Amusan, has re-entered the World Athletics women’s overall top 100 rankings.

In the latest update released by World Athletics, Amusan now ranks 88th in the world with a score of 1366, reclaiming her status as Nigeria and Africa’s number one female athlete.

Amusan, who took a break from competition after the Olympics, had slipped out of the elite ranking group for the first time since the system's inception in 2019—when she debuted at No. 96. Her recent performances have seen a significant resurgence.

Key to her comeback were two 12.45-second runs and a season’s best of 12.24 seconds at the 2025 Paris Diamond League, where she placed second behind the USA’s Grace Stark. That time is her fastest since she set the world record of 12.12 seconds in Oregon, USA, in 2022.

Her return to form has also seen her overtake compatriot Favour Ofili, who ended 2024 as Nigeria’s top-ranked female athlete but has now dropped to 175th in the latest rankings.

In her specialist event, the 100m hurdles, Amusan has climbed back into the top 10, currently sitting at No. 9, up from 13th at the end of last year.

With her form peaking ahead of upcoming major championships, Amusan appears poised to replicate, or even surpass, her stellar 2022 season, where she was ranked the world’s top sprint hurdler and No. 5 overall among women.
