USA Smashes U20 Mixed Relay Record as World Athletics U20 Championships Begin in Style

The opening day of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, produced a series of memorable performances, led by the United States' historic victory in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Joshua Shelton, Taylor-Nicole Overton, Jaelen Hunter and Olivia Harris combined to clock an outstanding 3:15.31, setting a new World U20 record and eclipsing the previous mark of 3:17.69, which had also been established by Team USA at the 2022 championships in Cali.

South Africa also celebrated a successful opening day after Jaco van Dyk claimed the nation's first medal of the championships.

The 16-year-old improved from a qualifying throw of 19.09m to a personal best of 19.80m in the men's shot put final, earning the bronze medal.

Brazil's Alessandro Borges secured gold with a 20.35m effort, while South Korea's Si-hoon Park took silver with 20.31m.

Kenya dominated the men's 5,000m final through Frankline Kibet, who added the world U20 title to the world U20 cross-country crown he won earlier this year.

Kibet crossed the finish line ahead of fellow Kenyan Nehemiah Kipngeno, while Ethiopia's Damitew Kebede produced a huge personal best to capture the bronze medal after slashing nearly 20 seconds from his previous best time.

The sprint events also delivered plenty of excitement as the leading contenders advanced confidently to the men's 100m final.

 American Tate Taylor posted the fastest semifinal time of 10.06 seconds, with South Africa's Marko Ferreira winning his race in 10.13 and Jamaica's Gary Card taking his semifinal in 10.16. The trio head into the final as the strongest medal favourites after impressive displays on the opening night.
