US-Based Nigerian Athlete Oluwabukola Pereira Shot Dead Weeks Before Graduation

Posted : 20 May 2026

The Nigerian athletics and academic communities have been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic death of postgraduate student and distance runner Oluwabukola Pereira in the United States. The 2025/2026 academic calendar was drawing to a close when the tragic incident occurred on Friday, May 8, 2026. Pereira was fatally shot during a robbery at Arise Auto Center in Lockland, Ohio, where she was employed.

According to reports from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, an active investigation has been launched to determine the official motive behind the shooting. Co-worker Don Simpson stated that Pereira was shot while bravely attempting to pursue a suspect who had fled the auto center with roughly $1,500 in cash. Simpson described the deceased Nigerian national as loyal, courageous, and deeply committed to building a prosperous life in America.

The tragedy struck just eight days before Pereira was scheduled to graduate from Xavier University with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree on May 16. The university management confirmed that she had also secured admission into a subsequent postgraduate program in Business Analytics. At the school's recent 188th commencement ceremonies at the Cintas Center, her husband Gbenga Showole and two stepchildren walked across the stage to receive her posthumous degree, earning a prolonged standing ovation from attendees.

Xavier University President Colleen Hanycz paid a glowing tribute to Pereira, describing her as a bright student widely known for her radiant positivity, profound faith, and generous personality. Beyond her academic brilliance, Pereira was an elite athlete and a highly active member of Cincinnati’s Elite running community. She competed passionately across the local circuit and was a recognized participant in prestigious long-distance events, including the famous Flying Pig Marathon.

Family members have expressed immense heartbreak, describing her as a shining star whose life was cut short just as she prepared for marriage following her engagement last year. Law enforcement officials have issued a public appeal for information to apprehend the suspect. The individual is described as a male between the ages of 25 and 35, of Black or Hispanic descent, with long hair styled in braids or dreadlocks, who was last seen fleeing on foot toward the Gardner Park area.
