Ultimate Championship: Amusan Wins Silver as Nigeria Makes Strong Budapest Start

Posted : 12 September 2026

Tobi Amusan produced a strong performance to claim silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary. The Nigerian clocked 12.34 seconds in Friday’s final to finish behind American Masai Russell.

Russell maintained her impressive 2026 form by winning the inaugural Ultimate Championship title in 12.22 seconds, while the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser completed the podium in 12.39. The result gave Amusan Nigeria’s first medal at the new three-day championship.

Amusan improved from her semifinal performance, when she ran 12.49 seconds to secure her place in the final. She entered the championship as one of the leading contenders, although Russell had taken the momentum after breaking Amusan’s former world record with a 12.09-second run in Zurich last month.

The silver adds another major achievement to Amusan’s decorated career and demonstrates her competitiveness against the world’s leading hurdlers. Russell, meanwhile, continued her unbeaten season by adding the Ultimate Championship crown to her Diamond League success.

Nigeria narrowly missed out on another final through Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400m. She finished sixth in her semifinal in 50.50 seconds, leaving her 12th overall among the 16 semifinalists.

Dominican Republic star Marileidy Paulino won that semifinal in 49.58 seconds, while Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser finished second in 49.67. Onojuvwevwo therefore missed the final despite producing a competitive performance.

Team Nigeria will continue its campaign in Budapest with more athletes in action on the second day of competition. Ezekiel Nathaniel is scheduled to compete in the men’s 400m hurdles semifinals, while sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi will line up in the men’s 100m semifinals. Ajayi is among a strong field that includes world and Diamond League champion Oblique Seville.

The inaugural Ultimate Championship features 381 athletes from 65 federations competing across 28 disciplines, with a record $10 million prize fund available. Individual event winners receive $150,000, making the Budapest event one of the most lucrative competitions in athletics.
