UK Athletics Returns to Profit for First Time Since 2017

Posted : 21 October 2025

UK Athletics has reported a surplus of £107,588, two years after facing potential bankruptcy, following cost-cutting measures.

UK Athletics (UKA) has posted a surplus for the first time since 2017, marking a significant turnaround for the governing body two years after it faced the threat of bankruptcy. The organisation, which recorded a record £3.7 million loss in 2023, has returned to profitability thanks to strict financial controls and strategic reforms.

To achieve this, UKA implemented tighter cost management, reduced its workforce from 72 to 62 staff members, and scaled back support for some programmes. Additionally, the governing body secured a landmark partnership with the organisers of the London Marathon and Great North Run for 2024, providing a vital financial boost and helping to safeguard the organisation against future crises.

UKA chair Ian Beattie welcomed the return to profit, saying: “It’s an important moment for UK Athletics and a real sign that the steps we have taken over the past two years are working. The turnaround has required hard decisions, careful management, and the commitment of many people.”

Beattie acknowledged the difficulty of the process, highlighting that savings were made across every area, including staff redundancies and reduced programme support outside the World Class Performance system. “These decisions were tough but necessary to secure the long-term stability of the sport. We are now a leaner, more focused organisation, and ultimately a stronger one as a result,” he added.
