Uganda’s athletics federation has confirmed that half-marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo and double Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei will not compete at this month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo due to personal reasons. The announcement was made late on Tuesday.
Kiplimo, 24, made history earlier this year by becoming the first runner to complete a half-marathon in under 57 minutes, clocking 56 minutes, 42 seconds in Barcelona.
Cheptegei, 28, earned Olympic gold in the 5,000 metres at Tokyo 2021 and the 10,000 metres at the 2024 Paris Games, though he finished ninth in the Tokyo Marathon in March.
Uganda Olympic Committee President Don Rukare described the absence of the two athletes as “unfortunate” but emphasized that their personal reasons must be respected.
He assured fans that consultations are ongoing and that there is no cause for alarm regarding the country’s participation. Uganda has yet to announce its full team for the championships, scheduled from 13-21 September.
