Udodi Onwuzurike Finishes Second in Poland 200m

Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike finished second in the men’s 200m at the ninth Wiesław Maniak Memorial in Szczecin, Poland, on Wednesday. He clocked 20.26 seconds to continue a strong run of performances in the 2026 season.

Onwuzurike produced the time in a race affected by a -0.8 metres per second headwind. American Brandon Hicklin won the event in 20.24 seconds, finishing just 0.02 seconds ahead of the Nigerian.

Belgian Simon Verherstraeten completed the podium in 20.55 seconds. Botswana’s Justice Oratile followed in fourth with 20.63 seconds, while Latvia’s Oskars Grava recorded 20.75 seconds.

The result adds another strong performance to Onwuzurike’s season. The Nigerian entered the Szczecin meeting with a season’s best of 20.09 seconds and a personal best of 19.76 seconds, which he recorded in 2023.

Onwuzurike has also enjoyed a strong international campaign this year. He won silver in the men’s 200m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after running 20.09 seconds in the final, finishing behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile.

The Nigerian’s consistency over the distance has strengthened his position among Africa’s leading 200m sprinters. His 20.26 seconds in Szczecin came despite the headwind and against a competitive international field.

The Wiesław Maniak Memorial is one of Poland’s established athletics meetings. The event has been part of the World Athletics Continental Tour at Bronze level since 2024 and attracts athletes from several countries.

The 2026 edition featured more than 200 athletes from over 40 countries. The organisers also highlighted the strong sprint field, with several competitors arriving with sub-20-second personal bests in the 100m.

For Onwuzurike, the second-place finish provides another competitive outing as the season progresses. The 23-year-old will now look to build on his consistency as he continues his international campaign.
