Former 800m runner and Nigerian international Edidiong Udo has added extra incentive to the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet by offering ₦200,000 to athletes who achieve set performance standards in the 800m events.
The special bonus will be available to competitors in both the men’s and women’s 800m races at the anniversary meet scheduled for November 7 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos.
The races will be named the Edidiong Udo Men’s 800m and Edidiong Udo Women’s 800m in recognition of his support.
Under the incentive scheme, every female athlete who runs under 2:07 and every male athlete who breaks 1:52 will qualify for the ₦200,000 bonus, regardless of their finishing position or the regular prize money on offer.
For Udo, the initiative represents a return to the event that played an important role in his early athletics career.
The Nigerian started out as an 800m runner before moving down to the 400m, where he went on to become national champion in 2022 and earn a scholarship to The Ohio State University.
He has since established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading quarter-milers, recording a personal best of 44.91 seconds at the 2026 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
The performance made Udo the second Nigerian to break 45 seconds in the 400m during the 2026 season.
He later made his Team Nigeria debut at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finishing eighth in the 400m final before helping Nigeria secure bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay.
Despite his progress in the 400m, Udo has maintained a strong connection with the 800m, which influenced his decision to support the event at Athletic Heat’s anniversary meet.
“I used to run the 800m, so supporting the event means a lot to me,” Udo said.
“I want to see athletes keep training, competing and putting themselves in a position to earn something for themselves.”
The quarter-miler also praised Athletic Heat for its decade-long contribution to the promotion and visibility of Nigerian and African athletes.
He particularly acknowledged the organisation’s founder and CEO, Ese Oguma, for creating a platform that continues to showcase athletes and their stories.
“I just want to appreciate Athletic Heat for the constant support they have shown to Nigerian athletes and for the work they continue to do in showcasing Nigerian and African athletes,” he said.
Udo added that Athletic Heat’s 10th anniversary was an opportunity for him to contribute to a platform he believes has played an important role in athletics development.
“Athletic Heat has stood for excellence for the past 10 years, and I want to be part of that. To celebrate 10 years, they are putting together a meet, and I encourage every Nigerian and African athlete to be part of this milestone,” he said.
Oguma welcomed Udo’s intervention, describing it as a significant gesture from an athlete who understands the demands of progressing through the sport.
“Edidiong is someone who understands what it means to develop through athletics, having competed in the 800m before moving to the 400m,” Oguma said.
“His decision to support both the men’s and women’s 800m and add a performance bonus is a great gesture to the athletes.”
With the ₦200,000 bonus available to every athlete who meets the required standard, Udo believes the incentive can inspire competitors to chase faster times at the Lagos meet.
“This is just my little way of appreciating Athletic Heat and being part of the excellence they are known for. I encourage everyone to come and be part of it. Keep training, keep working and hopefully you can get some cool cash for yourself too,” he said.
The Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet will celebrate 10 years of the platform’s contribution to athletics while providing another competitive stage for athletes from Nigeria and across Africa.
