UAS Series Ends in Lagos with Over 500 Students in Attendance

Posted : 07 June 2025

The 2025 United Athletics Series (UAS) has concluded in Lagos, with over 500 students from schools across the local government and local council development areas in attendance for the one-day event.

The series, organized by Culture Rush in collaboration with School Games, LASUBEB, and the Lagos State Sports Commission, was aimed at discovering talent in track and field events, both for Lagos State and the country at large.

Held at the University of Lagos Sports Centre, the event saw participants compete in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4×400 meters relay, and long jump in both the boys' and girls' categories.

The organizer of the championship, Adeyemi Egbeoluwa, explained that the event was designed to discover talent early at the grassroots level, helping to nurture young athletes who will eventually take over from the older generations. He commended the Lagos State Sports Commission and LASUBEB for their support.

He also mentioned plans to introduce U-14, U-15, and U-16 categories and establish an academy to train the selected children to become world-class athletes.

Egbeoluwa expressed satisfaction with the children’s sportsmanship and enthusiasm, promising to use the event's success to advance athletics at the grassroots level.

"My decision to organize this championship is based on the fact that we tend to focus on secondary schools and institutions of higher learning. However, we should start from the primary school level to address the missing link and discover athletes early, nurturing them to stardom as is done in other countries," he explained.

"This is the U-13 version today because we want to catch them very early," he added. "We also plan to introduce U-14, U-15, and U-16 series, and there's no turning back on our plan to make Lagos State the hub of athletics in Nigeria and the entire West African sub-region."

In her remarks, Dr. Mrs. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Director of School Sports, Lagos State, stated that the championship aligns with the state's commitment to ensuring that students combine education with sports. She promised that the event would be sustained, furthering grassroots sports development.

The Education Secretary of Lagos Island Local Government Area, Tijani Tajudeen, and a board member of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. Babatunde Adewale Jimoh, both commended the initiative, calling it vital for the development of athletics at the grassroots level. They expressed their ongoing support for the event.

Some of the children praised the organizers for the opportunity to compete against other students from across the state and called for the event to be held annually.

At the end of the day, certificates and medals were awarded to the winners.
