Tobi Amusan Secures Third as Masai Russell Blazes to Meeting Record in Shanghai

Nigerian sprint sensation Tobi Amusan commenced her 2026 outdoor Diamond League campaign with a third-place finish in the women's 100 metres hurdles. The star-studded event took place at the opening leg of the athletic season in Shaoxing, China, on Saturday, May 16, 2026. Amusan crossed the finish line in a solid season-best time of 12.41 seconds to seal a podium spot.

Reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell of the United States dominated the highly competitive race to clinch the gold medal. The American star generated a flawless performance to cross the line in a staggering 12.25 seconds. Her time established a brand new meeting record and currently stands as the fastest outdoor time in the world this season.

Bahamian indoor world champion Devynne Charlton secured the silver medal by posting a lifetime personal best. Charlton exploded out of the blocks to dictate the early tempo before settling for second place in a new national record time of 12.38 seconds. Amusan, who remains the current world record holder at 12.12 seconds, fought back tenaciously from lane two to hold off the remaining elite pack.

The Nigerian track queen expressed deep satisfaction with her podium placement after encountering severe flight delays en route to the stadium. Amusan revealed post-race that she struggled significantly with intense jet lag and general body fatigue after arriving in China on the morning of the meet. She noted that securing a bronze medal under such grueling circumstances was an incredibly fabulous season opener.

The encouraging performance provides a timely psychological boost for the African champion as global athletes intensify their technical preparations. Amusan confirmed that her ultimate competitive focus remains firmly fixed on the upcoming World Athletics Championships scheduled for later this year. The global hurdling elite will now travel south to face another quick turnaround at the upcoming series stop in Xiamen this weekend.
