Tobi Amusan Loses 100m Hurdles World Record as Masai Russell Runs 12.09

Posted : 28 August 2026

Tobi Amusan has lost her women's 100m hurdles world record after Masai Russell produced a stunning 12.09 seconds at the Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League meeting on Thursday. The American Olympic champion lowered Amusan's four-year-old record by 0.03 seconds in a race run with no wind.

Russell delivered a clean run at the Letzigrund Stadium to become the new world record holder. Her mark is subject to the usual ratification process by World Athletics.

Amusan finished second in 12.23 seconds. The Nigerian's time was a season's best and marked a strong response after she entered the race with a 2026 best of 12.28 seconds. Dutch European champion Nadine Visser finished third in 12.34, also setting a season's best.

Amusan had held the world record since July 2022. She ran 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene before winning the final in 12.06 seconds with a following wind above the legal limit. Her 12.12 remains the previous official world record.

Russell had been closing in on Amusan's mark throughout the 2026 season. She ran 12.14 seconds in Xiamen in May, becoming the second-fastest woman in history at that time and moving within two hundredths of the Nigerian's record.

The American also defeated Amusan in Shanghai earlier in May, clocking 12.25 seconds while the Nigerian finished third in 12.41. Russell then continued her strong season before producing the record-breaking performance in Zurich.

Russell, 26, now holds both the Olympic title and the world record. She won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024, while her latest performance gives her another major landmark in a rapidly developing career.

The Zurich meeting was also significant for the Diamond League standings. It was the penultimate meeting of the 2026 series before the final in Brussels on September 4 and 5, making the race important for athletes seeking points and qualification.

For Amusan, the result ends a historic four-year reign at the top of the event. However, her 12.23 performance places her second on the 2026 world list behind Russell and shows that the Nigerian remains among the leading 100m hurdlers ahead of the season finale.
