Nigeria closed the 2025 athletics season with renewed optimism as world record holder Tobi Amusan headlined the country’s presence in the latest World Athletics rankings, finishing the year among the top three athletes in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Amusan’s third-place ranking in her discipline reflects another year of elite-level consistency, as she accumulated 1,430 points, trailing only Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji and American Grace Stark. This confirms the Nigerian star’s status as one of the most reliable performers in global track and field.
A major boost to her ranking came from her silver medal performance at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, where she once again demonstrated her ability to deliver on the sport’s biggest stage.
Beyond Amusan’s exploits, Nigeria also recorded encouraging representation across other events. Hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel and shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi both ended the season ranked within the world’s top 100 in their respective disciplines, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing footprint in international athletics.
Amusan remains Nigeria’s standout female athlete on the rankings table, being the only Nigerian woman to feature in the top five of her event. She also finished 28th overall in the women’s rankings for 2025, a clear indicator of her sustained excellence throughout the season.
As the athletics world turns its focus to 2026, Nigeria’s strong end to 2025—led by Amusan’s brilliance—offers hope for even greater achievements on the global stage.
