World record holder Tobi Amusan stormed into the semifinals of the women’s 100m hurdles on Sunday morning at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Competing in the final heat, Amusan delivered a powerful start and maintained her rhythm against a strong field that included Devynne Charlton and Elena Carraro. She crossed the line in 12.53 seconds, securing her spot in Monday’s semifinals with apparent ease.
Charlton finished second in 12.69s, while Carraro came third in 12.86s, both advancing alongside Amusan.
Amusan’s time ranked as the fifth fastest overall across the six heats. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams led the field with an impressive 12.40s in heat 2, followed closely by Grace Stark (12.46s), Nadine Visser (12.48s), and Pia Skrzyszowska (12.51s). American hurdler Masai Russell matched Amusan’s 12.53s in heat 1.
“It was a very comfortable race. I have not competed in two weeks, so it was about getting back into form,” Russell said after her race. “This season is a testament to the hard work I have put in since the beginning of the year. The goal is to add the world title to the Olympic gold.”
Danielle Williams, speaking about her own ambitions, added: “I told everybody who asked me—the goal is not to defend a title but to gain one. I can’t defend what I already have. I don’t have this one; I am trying to get it. I will run whatever time it takes to win.”
Meanwhile, in the men’s 100m semifinals later today, attention will turn to Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi, as fans eagerly anticipate his performance on the global stage.
