Tobi Amusan Arrives In Team Nigeria Camp Ahead Of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Posted : 17 July 2026

World 100-metre hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan has officially arrived at Team Nigeria’s high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland. Her arrival provides a massive boost to the national contingent as preparations ramp up for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 29-year-old sprint sensation joined the delegation for the final phase of intense training ahead of the multi-sport event.

Amusan enters the camp on the back of another highly successful Diamond League campaign. She has already secured her automatic spot in the season-ending Diamond League Final scheduled for Brussels, Belgium. The reigning Commonwealth champion will lead Nigeria's track and field squad as she targets a historic third consecutive gold medal.

The African champion has maintained spectacular form this season, successfully defending her continental title in Ghana. She has also clocked an impressive season’s best time of 12.28 seconds on three different occasions. Amusan will launch her title defence as the outright favourite in a highly competitive international field. Her rivals include Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds, South Africa’s Marione Fourie, and Australia's Michelle Jenneke.

The National Sports Commission recently announced a comprehensive new athlete welfare package to motivate the squad. Under this initiative, local camping allowances have been significantly increased to improve team morale. Athletes training at the world-class Aberdeen Sports Village are also receiving enhanced daily overseas training stipends. Team Nigeria Captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo expressed deep appreciation to the commission for creating an ideal environment.

However, Nigeria’s medal prospects suffered a minor setback following the sudden withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume. The defending champion was ruled out of the upcoming games after picking up an unfortunate injury. In her absence, indoor specialist Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor will represent the nation in the event. The Nigerian team remains highly optimistic about delivering an outstanding performance when the global tournament begins.
