The maiden edition of the President Bola Tinubu Sports Festival in Ondo State concluded on a vibrant note on Tuesday at the sports complex of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
The month-long event attracted a large turnout of sports enthusiasts and youths from across the state. Organized by the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), the festival featured athletes from various zones competing in football, athletics, table tennis, and other sports.
Mr. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, Director-General of GMT in the state, said at the grand finale that the festival aimed to discover, nurture, and develop young talents while promoting unity, discipline, and youth engagement through sports. He emphasized that sports remain a powerful tool for nation-building, aligning with President Tinubu’s focus on youth empowerment and productive engagement.
Yusuf-Ogunleye expressed gratitude to the festival’s sponsor, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Interior Minister, for his steadfast support of the initiative and the president. He explained that the event also served as a platform to mobilize grassroots support for the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda, providing young people with opportunities to showcase their talents in a competitive but friendly environment.
The DG acknowledged the cooperation of FUTA and other tertiary institutions across the state for providing facilities that ensured the smooth hosting of the festival despite logistical challenges. “Our vision is clear: to mobilize grassroots support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, while enlightening citizens about policies aimed at strengthening the economy, creating jobs, securing lives, and restoring national confidence. Our mission is to engage, educate, and empower peacefully and patriotically, ensuring that governance is understood not as distant politics but as shared responsibility,” he said.
Similarly, Hon. Tola Banjo, DG of GMT in Ogun State, stated that the group’s collective purpose was to work together to showcase the president’s achievements, noting that campaigns had not yet commenced. He praised the initiative behind the sports festival, highlighting its potential to promote grassroots development and engagement.
Former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Ondo State, Mrs. Lola Fagbemi, also commended the programme, noting that it showcased the achievements of President Tinubu and urged the region to rally behind him for successful governance.
