Team Nigeria to Compete in All Six Events at 2026 World Relays in Botswana

Posted : 22 April 2026

World Athletics confirmed on Tuesday that Nigeria has successfully entered all six relay disciplines for the 2026 World Athletics Relays. The competition is scheduled to take place in Gaborone, Botswana, on May 2 and 3. This announcement marks a major milestone for the nation as it prepares to showcase its depth in sprinting and middle-distance running.

Nigeria originally secured automatic qualification in only three specific categories. These included the men’s 4x400m, the women’s 4x400m, and the mixed 4x100m events. The national teams earned these spots through their previous performances on the continental and global stages over the last season.

The global governing body recently allowed member nations to register for events where they had not yet qualified. Nigeria took advantage of this window to submit entries for the remaining three categories. World Athletics approved these additional spots, ensuring a full Nigerian contingent will travel to Botswana next month.

The updated schedule means Nigerian athletes will now compete in the men’s and women’s 4x100m sprints. They will also participate in the men’s and women’s 4x400m races. Finally, the team will feature in both the mixed 4x100m and the mixed 4x400m relay events during the two-day meet.

This tournament serves as a primary qualifying route for the 2026 World Athletics Championships. Teams finishing in the top positions in Gaborone will secure direct entry to the flagship event later this year. The competition also offers vital ranking points that determine seedings for future international championships.

Athletics fans expect the Nigerian technical team to name a strong squad featuring established stars and emerging talents. The inclusion in all six events provides more athletes with the opportunity to compete at the highest level. Coaches believe this full participation will improve Nigeria’s chances of winning multiple medals in Botswana.

The 2026 World Relays represent a significant test for the West African nation against global powerhouses like the USA and Jamaica. Nigeria’s recent success in the mixed relays has made them a team to watch in these specialized formats. High performance in Gaborone will be essential for maintaining Nigeria's rising status in global athletics standings.
