This was stated by PCN President, Sunday Odebode, who praised the country's Para-athletes after Nigeria emerged second overall out of 42 participating countries at the competition.
“The NSC, under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has elevated the level of support given to people living with disabilities,” Odebode said.
“We’ve never had it this good. The Commission is not only supporting us financially but also providing the necessary technical assistance for both international and domestic events.”
He noted that Nigeria’s outstanding outing in Tunisia secured qualifications for the World Championships in India later this year, in addition to earning slots for the Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Odebode further commended the Commission for the smooth funding of training programs and camping activities, which he said are crucial for podium finishes in upcoming international events.
“The Commission’s support has simplified the execution of our various programs. For instance, the Para-lifters recently concluded their trials where we discovered 10 new athletes, who will now compete at the World Tournament in Santiago, Chile.”
“Our Para-athletes will also open their training camp this month. Wheelchair basketball and Para-swimming teams are likewise preparing for the Commonwealth Games,” he added. “None of these would have been possible without the NSC’s renewed funding strategy.”
Team Nigeria concluded the African Para Grand Prix with 19 medals: 10 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze.
