Team Nigeria Shines at 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship

Posted : 07 October 2025

Team Nigeria delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship, breaking multiple African records and highlighting a new generation of talented swimmers. Competing against top athletes from West and Central Africa, Nigeria’s swimmers demonstrated exceptional skill, collecting medals and setting new benchmarks.

Leading the charge was 14-year-old Aidan Dumuije-Abili, who turned the championship into a record-breaking spectacle. Aidan set five new Africa Zone 2 records, winning six gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, and was named the tournament’s most valuable junior athlete.

His 100m freestyle time of 55.31 seconds, earning 610 points, stood among the best of the competition. “Every medal means more when you’re representing your country,” he said. “Breaking records is great, but making Nigeria proud is what matters most.”

Another rising star, 14-year-old Endurance Olise, impressed on his debut by claiming two gold medals, while 12-year-old Maryam Muhammed delivered a phenomenal performance, winning both individual and team medals.

Maryam’s technique and composure earned praise from senior coaches, who described her as “a future star with immense potential.”

Timilehin Olaya excelled in distance events, winning three golds and setting new championship records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle, establishing himself as Nigeria’s top junior open-water swimmer.

Tofunmi Ibidapo also shone, earning multiple medals in individual and team events, while Goodluck Godwin was selected for the World Aquatics Future Wave training program. Experienced swimmers Dorcas Oka and Agnes John added further depth, ensuring strong results in the senior category.

Team Nigeria finished among the top three nations in the Junior Division, collecting 30 medals—11 gold, 5 silver, and 14 bronze—holding their own against regional powerhouses Ghana and Senegal.

Coaches and officials hailed the performances as evidence of Nigeria’s growing strength in swimming. “These results prove that our youth program is working,” said Team Nigeria coach Abiodun Ojomo.

“We’re not just participating anymore—we’re competing, breaking records, and building future champions.”
