Nigeria's athletics contingent made significant strides at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, by securing additional qualification spots for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing. The success came on the final day of competition as the team overcame early setbacks to confirm their presence in China. These latest achievements bring the total number of qualified Nigerian relay teams to three following a historic opening day.
The highlight of the final day featured the women's 4x100m relay team, which staged a remarkable comeback after a disappointing baton mishap in the opening heats. The quartet clocked a season’s best time of 42.94 seconds to finish second in the repechage round, effectively sealing their place for the global showpiece next year. Teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu played a pivotal role as the anchor leg, demonstrating the depth of talent within the domestic circuit.
In the mixed 4x400m relay, the Nigerian squad delivered a tactical and composed performance to secure their ticket. Anchored by the experienced Chidi Okezie, the team included Nathaniel Ezekiel, Taiwo Mary Kudoro, and Patience Okon George. They posted a season’s best time of 3:12.88, which proved sufficient to finish among the top two in their qualifying heat and guarantee a spot in Beijing.
These results follow a landmark performance on Saturday when the mixed 4x100m quartet set a new African record of 40.24 seconds. That team, led by Favour Ashe, not only secured a World Championship berth but also qualified for the inaugural World Ultimate Championships in Budapest. Despite the absence of several overseas stars, the home-based athletes have been praised for their resilience and raw speed on the international stage.
The Nigerian Athletics Federation has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the locally trained athletes who seized their moment under pressure. While the women's and mixed teams have celebrated, the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m squads still have opportunities to qualify later this year. The focus now shifts toward preparation for the upcoming continental assignments and fine-tuning baton exchanges ahead of the championship season.
