Team Nigeria has officially commenced the final phase of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with 54 athletes, coaches, and officials arriving at the team's training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Among the first batch to arrive were reigning Nigerian men's 100m champion Favour Ashe, experienced quarter-miler Patience George-Okon, and para-powerlifting star Folashade Oluwafemiayo.
The contingent was welcomed by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, who expressed satisfaction with both the quality of the training facilities and the positive atmosphere within the camp.
According to Olopade, the athletes arrived in high spirits, displaying strong commitment, unity, and determination ahead of the Games, while additional members of Team Nigeria were expected to join the camp over the weekend.
Following an inspection of the facilities, the NSC boss described the environment as ideal for the team's final preparations before the Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
"I arrived at our pre-Commonwealth Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, to personally receive our athletes, coaches, and officials as Team Nigeria begins the final phase of preparations for Glasgow 2026," Olopade said.
"Seeing our contingent arrive with so much determination and confidence reminds me why preparation remains the foundation of success.
"From inspecting the facilities to welcoming our athletes, I am satisfied that we have created the right environment for them to train and compete at their very best.
"The atmosphere in Aberdeen is excellent, the facilities are first-class, and the team is in high spirits.
"Over the next three weeks, every training session, every recovery period, and every detail will count as we prepare to proudly represent our nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games."
Olopade added that the Commission's priority is to shield the athletes from unnecessary distractions while ensuring they receive world-class support throughout the training camp.
He expressed confidence that the thorough preparations would enable Team Nigeria to improve on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and return home with a significant haul of gold medals.
With the final phase of preparations now underway, Team Nigeria will look to fine-tune its readiness ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Commission remains optimistic that the combination of quality preparation and athlete commitment will translate into a successful medal-winning campaign.
