Team Nigeria makes strong statement at African Championships in Accra

Posted : 13 May 2026

Team Nigeria delivered an impressive performance on the opening day of the ongoing Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with several athletes booking places in the next round and others finishing on the podium.

Nigeria’s campaign began on a bright note as Rosemary Chukwuma dominated Heat 2 of the women’s 100m event, cruising to victory in 11.44s. The sprinter looked comfortable throughout the race and finished well ahead of the rest of the field.

In the men’s 100m heats, Chidera Ezeakor produced another outstanding display, clocking 10.38s to defeat home favourite Abdul-Rasheed Saminu of Ghana and qualify for the next stage in style.

Samson Nathaniel also maintained Nigeria’s strong momentum in the men’s 400m event after powering to victory ahead of Uganda’s Omuka Kenneth and Kenya’s Musika Malongo.

Nigeria’s Esther Okon safely advanced to the next round of the women’s 400m despite finishing behind South Africa’s Marlie Viljeon in her heat.

World record holder Tobi Amusan once again showed her class in the women’s 100m hurdles, posting a season’s best time of 12.82s to qualify for Wednesday’s final as the fastest athlete across both heats.

There was also drama in the men’s sprint event involving Ashe Favor, who was initially disqualified for a false start. However, following a successful protest by Team Nigeria, he was allowed a solo re-run and seized the opportunity by recording 10.55s to progress into the semi-finals.

Nigeria equally celebrated success in the women’s Discus event, where Divine Oladipo secured a silver medal in her debut appearance for the country, while Obiageri Ameachi added a bronze medal to Nigeria’s tally.

The championships, which began on May 12 in Accra, will run until May 17 with Team Nigeria competing across several track and field events.

With these early successes, the Nigerian contingent has established itself as a formidable force at the continental gathering. The combination of podium finishes and strong qualifying times suggests a promising medal outlook as the competition progresses toward the final events.
