Team Nigeria Face Global Test at World Ultimate Championships

Team Nigeria will be aiming to make an immediate impact as the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships gets underway in Budapest, Hungary, from Sept. 11 to 13.

Nine Nigerian athletes are set to compete at the landmark championship, which has brought together some of the biggest names in global athletics for three days of high-level competition.

World champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan headlines Nigeria’s contingent, with the hurdler set to compete in the women’s 100m hurdles semifinal.

Amusan faces a star-studded field that includes Devynne Charlton, Danielle Williams, Alia Armstrong and Keni Harrison, with a place in the final at stake.

In the men’s 100m, Kayinsola Ajayi will also have a difficult assignment as he lines up against the likes of American Kenny Bednarek, Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon, South Africa’s Akani Simbine and Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs.

Nigeria’s presence will also be felt in the mixed 4x100m relay, where the country has been listed among nine nations competing for honours.

The Nigerian team, which boasts a season’s best of 40.24 seconds, will battle Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Jamaica, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Germany and the United States.

The relay pool features Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Miracle Ezechukwu, Udodi Onwuzurike, Rosemary Nwankwo and Amusan.

Ella Onojuvwevwo will carry Nigeria’s hopes in the women’s 400m semifinal after being drawn in Heat 1 alongside some of the event’s leading contenders.

She will race against Dominican Republic star Marileidy Paulino, Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser and Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce in a heat expected to produce a fierce battle for qualification.

Other Nigerians in action are Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200m and Ezekiel Nathaniel in the men’s 400m hurdles.

With the inaugural edition attracting an impressive collection of global stars, Nigeria’s contingent will have the opportunity to test its strength against the best and establish an early mark in the history of the new championship.
