Team Nigeria will battle for medals in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay finals after another impressive showing at the ongoing CAA African Senior Athletics Championships on Day 3.
The Nigerian men’s relay squad produced a commanding performance to secure qualification for the final, raising hopes of another gold medal for the country in Accra.
The quartet of Favour Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin, and Chidera Ezeakor clocked 38.77 seconds to win their heat ahead of Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Nigeria displayed excellent baton exchanges and explosive speed throughout the race to comfortably seal automatic qualification for the final.
Ghana recorded the fastest time across the heats after Edwin Gadayi, Joseph Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Saminu Abdul-Rasheed combined to win Heat 2 in 38.69 seconds. Botswana followed closely with 38.80 seconds, while Kenya placed third in 39.15 seconds.
Away from the relays, Emmanuel Ojeli narrowly missed qualification for the men’s 400m final but still delivered an encouraging performance. Competing in only his third individual 400m race of the season, Ojeli posted a new personal best of 45.49 seconds.
Nigeria also secured representation in the women’s high jump final through promising athletes Clergy Edet and Treasure Omosivwe, who continue to gain valuable international exposure at the championship.
With the relay finals scheduled for Day 4, attention now turns to whether Team Nigeria can convert its impressive qualifying performances into podium finishes.
The strong displays across both track and field events underscore Nigeria’s competitive depth at the continental level. As the championship progresses, the focus remains on maintaining this momentum to secure a significant medal haul in the final stages of the competition.
