Team Nigeria Dominates Sprints at CAA U-18 and U-20 Championships

Team Nigeria delivered a clean sweep in the U-18 women’s 100 metres final at the ongoing Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18 and U-20 Championships in Abeokuta. Miracle Ezechukwu led the charge, winning gold with a time of 11.88 seconds, followed by Rosemary Nwankwo with 11.96 seconds for silver, and Miriam Jegede who claimed bronze in 12.20 seconds.

 

In the U-20 women’s 100 metres final, Nigeria’s Chioma Nweke and Success Oyibu continued the country's sprint dominance. Nweke clinched gold with a time of 11.65 seconds, while Oyibu secured silver in 11.78 seconds. Côte d’Ivoire’s Lou Yonan Chantal finished third, taking bronze in 11.87 seconds.

 

The U-18 men’s 100 metres final saw South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela and Jayden Fourie take gold and silver with times of 10.61 seconds and 10.76 seconds respectively. Nigeria’s Clifford Igbigbidje earned the bronze medal with a time of 10.89 seconds. Fellow Nigerians Destiny Egbon and Adeola Adeniji finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

 

In the U-20 men’s 100 metres final, Nigeria’s John Caleb also made it to the podium with a bronze medal, clocking 10.61 seconds. He finished behind South Africa’s Clinton Owatinya, who won gold in 10.42 seconds, and Letebele Karabo, who took silver with 10.54 seconds.

 

Team Nigeria capped off the day with a gold medal in the U-20 mixed 4x400m relay event, further solidifying their dominance on home soil.

 

Following their triumphs, the jubilant trio of Ezechukwu, Nwankwo, and Jegede dedicated their victories to the enthusiastic Nigerian spectators who had cheered them throughout the competition.
