Success Oyibu Reaches World U20 200m Final as Ezechukwu Is Disqualified

Nigeria's Success Oyibu reached the women's 200m final at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon after winning her semi-final in 23.13 seconds. The Nigerian sprinter will now be the country's sole representative in a championship final on Day Four.

Oyibu had earlier produced an impressive performance in the opening round. She won her heat in 23.04 seconds to progress to the semi-finals and continued her strong form when it mattered most.

Her progress gives Nigeria a medal opportunity at the championship. The 200m final will bring together the leading performers from the qualifying rounds as Oyibu bids to finish the competition on the podium.

Miracle Ezechukwu also made a strong start to her 200m campaign. She won her opening-round heat in 23.34 seconds before producing an even faster performance in the semi-finals.

Ezechukwu crossed the line in a personal-best 22.61 seconds. However, her performance was later wiped out after she was disqualified for a lane infringement, ending her hopes of reaching the final. World Athletics' official results confirm the semi-final stage and Ezechukwu's participation in the event.

The disqualification was a major setback for the Nigerian, who had shown enough speed to challenge for a place in the final. Her 22.61 seconds was a significant improvement on her opening-round time and underlined her potential at the U20 level.

Nigeria also had representatives in other events on Day Three. Perfect Faye finished sixth in his men's 200m heat in 21.29 seconds and was unable to advance to the next round.

Precious Opinion competed in the men's triple jump final after qualifying with a personal best. He finished seventh overall with a best effort of 15.82 metres, giving Nigeria another top-eight finish at the championships.

Chika Bakwunye's women's 100m hurdles campaign ended after she failed to finish her heat. She fell during the race and could not complete the event.

The World Athletics U20 Championships are being held in Oregon from August 5 to 9. The competition has brought together the leading young athletes from around the world, with Nigeria among the African nations seeking strong performances on the global stage.

Oyibu will now carry Nigeria's medal hopes into the women's 200m final. Her progression also provides a positive highlight for the Nigerian team after Ezechukwu's unfortunate disqualification and the early exits of Faye and Bakwunye.
