Stars set for thrilling showdown as Commonwealth Games Athletics Trials conclude in Lagos

Posted : 23 June 2026

The 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Athletics National Trials will reach a thrilling conclusion at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, with the men's 100 metres and the men's and women's 400 metres finals expected to take centre stage.

After two days of intense competition that produced new records, personal bests, and impressive performances, attention now shifts to the final day as athletes battle for places in Nigeria's team to the Commonwealth Games.

The women's 100m title has already been decided, with U.S.-based Blessing Ogundiran emerging as the new national champion after clocking an impressive 11.12 seconds.

Focus now turns to the men's 100m final, where some of Nigeria's fastest sprinters, including Favour Ashe, Chidera Ezeakor, Fakorede Adekalu, Tejiri Godwin, and Enoch Adegoke, will compete for national honours.

The women's 400m final is also expected to be one of the highlights of the day. Rising star IyanuOluwa Aderemi enters the race after setting a personal best of 51.86 seconds in the semi-finals and will face experienced campaigners Patience Okon-George, Taiwo Kudoro, Faith Ezechukwu, Jecinter Lawrence, and Becky Ebiyadi.

In the men's 400m final, Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Victor Sampson, Samson Nathaniel, Victory Achakpoekri, and Tyler Johnson are all expected to challenge for the title, with strong expectations that more than one athlete could dip below the 45-second mark.

Other events scheduled for the final day include the men's 110m hurdles, women's 100m hurdles, men's and women's 800m finals, as well as the men's and women's 200m finals.

On Monday, Olympian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed the men's shot put title with a throw of 21.46 metres, while Oyesade Oyetayo won the men's hammer throw after recording a distance of 65.07 metres.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President Tonobok Okowa expressed satisfaction with the quality of competition and the impressive turnout of Nigerian athletes from both home and abroad.

He reaffirmed that selection for the 2026 Commonwealth Games team would be based strictly on merit and current performance.

The high level of competition displayed throughout the national trials underscores the exceptional talent pool ready to represent the nation on the global stage. With individual berths tightly contested across both track and field events, Nigeria is positioned to field a highly competitive squad for Glasgow. The successful conclusion of these trials sets a promising benchmark for the country's upcoming international campaign.
