Stakeholders Call for Integrity Amid AFN Election Postponement Rumours

Posted : 09 June 2025

With the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) elections scheduled for June 12, 2025, stakeholders are calling for integrity and transparency amid growing rumours of a possible postponement. The athletics community stresses the need for the process to proceed as planned, warning that any delay could undermine Nigeria’s commitment to credible sports governance.

Concerns have been raised that postponing the elections without valid justification would send the wrong signal to international bodies like World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics, especially given Nigeria’s history of controversies in the sport. Such a move could attract negative scrutiny or sanctions and further damage the Federation’s reputation.

Significant financial and logistical resources have already been invested to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections, including venue preparation, security arrangements, and the accreditation of delegates. A postponement at this stage would not only waste these resources but also reflect poor planning and mismanagement.

The human effort behind the scenes is also considerable—officials, electoral committee members, and delegates from across the country have adjusted schedules, booked travel, and dedicated their time to this process. Delaying the election now would not only disrespect their commitment but could also demoralize those working to uphold due process.

Finally, any postponement could disrupt Nigeria’s representation in upcoming international competitions. A functional AFN leadership is vital for proper planning, athlete preparation, and international engagement. The AFN election is a critical test of the country’s sports governance. It must go ahead as scheduled—free, fair, and credible—to demonstrate Nigeria’s readiness to manage its athletic affairs with maturity and integrity.
