Spectator interrupts race at Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes – "Not clever"

Posted : 28 April 2025

Kimberley Le Court of AG Insurance-Soudal claimed the first classic victory of her career at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes. However, the race was momentarily interrupted by a surprising incident when a spectator, on a bike, joined the route. Fortunately, the race marshals acted swiftly to remove the intruder, ensuring there were no injuries or further interruptions, allowing the race to continue smoothly toward a thrilling conclusion.

Despite the brief disturbance, Le Court held her ground and emerged victorious in a dramatic finish, marking her first win in the prestigious classic. The incident involving the spectator caused some concern but was quickly handled by the officials, who ensured that the race stayed on track.

Commenting on the situation, one observer highlighted the absurdity of the interruption, stating that while it’s fine to ride along the bike path, joining the race itself is completely out of line. The intruder was promptly removed by the marshals, allowing the competition to resume without further issues.

With the intruder out of the race, the focus shifted back to the leading riders. Antonia Niedermaier, Cedrine Kerbaol, and Anna van der Breggen, who won the race in 2017, all remained in contention as they battled it out for the top spots.

The presence of these strong contenders ensured that the race remained intense and competitive, even after the brief disruption. Le Court, however, managed to maintain her composure and hold on to her lead, ultimately crossing the finish line first.

Some riders expressed their frustration with the situation, stressing how inappropriate it was for a spectator to join the race. They agreed that the person should have been removed immediately, as such actions posed unnecessary risks to the athletes.

In the final standings, Puck Pieterse of Alpecin-Deceuninck finished in second place, while Demi Vollering of FDJ SUEZ claimed third. Despite the brief distraction, the race ended with a well-deserved victory for Kimberley Le Court, who celebrated her landmark achievement.
