South African Sprinters Shine at Diamond League Meeting

South African athletes produced strong performances at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in Chorzow, Poland, on Sunday, with Zakithi Nene securing a podium finish in the men’s 400m.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Zakithi Nene claimed third place in the 400m, crossing the line in 44.37 seconds. The result marked his fourth podium finish on the Diamond League circuit this season.

World champion Collen Kebinatshipi won the race in 43.59 seconds, while American Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin finished second in 43.83.

In the men’s 100m final, South African champion Gift Leotlela placed fifth in 9.95 seconds, while national record holder Akani Simbine was seventh in 9.96.

Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville took victory in a meeting-record 9.83 seconds in a remarkably competitive race, with all nine finalists breaking the 10-second barrier.

Leotlela had earlier finished second in his opening-round heat in 9.92 seconds. Simbine placed third in the same heat, recording a season-best 9.93.

The Diamond League moves to Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday, August 27. The meeting will be the final event before the series finale.
